Approximately 20 years ago, while living in East Sussex. I was invited to a party by a friend, at that party I was introduced to one of her friends, who just happened to be the owner and breeder of some of the first Maine Coons to come into the United Kingdom. During the course of the evening I fell in love with the breed. I was amazed by their size, they stunning coats and their playful personality and by the end of the evening I was completely smitten and was determined to own one of these beautiful animals. Sadly, due to personal circumstances I wasn't able to commit to a Maine Coon immediately, in fact, as it happened I eventually waited over twenty years, for my first Maine Coon!! Back in 2001 I decided that the time was right, and started the search for my first pedigree cat and my first Maine Coon. After chatting to lots of breeders, and reading, it seemed almost every book ever written and checking out numerous web sites. I eventually came across the breeder Lynnette Cannell of Mabalakat Maine Coons. I was thrilled to find that she had a Brown Tortie Tabby girl available. After a long chat, a time and date was set for our first visit to see the kitten, and needless to say after that initial visit I was hooked, and eventually Mabalakat Daisy (aka Bitzy Boo) came to live with us. During my visit to Lynnette I expressed my interest in showing and she very kindly offered to support and mentor me. She helped me get to grips with the intricacies of showing, beginning with how to groom a Maine Coon properly and how to prepare the cat for showing. She also met me at my first show, here in Nottingham and throughout the day she explained the show process to me. She pointed out the outstanding cats and explained the standard of points, against which all cats are judged to me. Even now she continues to mentor me, giving freely of her time and expertise, she is a fountain of knowledge, a great support and has become a close friend. I have continued to show and Mabalakat Daisy (aka Bitzy Boo) is now a Grand Premiere. A few years into showing, due to medical reasons I took early retirement from work and it was at that point I decided to breed. I returned to Lynnette for my first breeding queen, Mabalakat Fire and Rain (aka Smudgy Smoo) a Tortie, Smoke and White Maine Coon . Thank you Lynnette for making this possible and for trusting me with all your lovely girls. I'm now beginning to establish my own breeding cattery, with several girls and my own stud boy and the rest as they say, is history!!
